The final terms of the deal have been settled at £116 million, making it the highest transfer fee in British football history. However, the £16 million in bonuses that make up the difference are conditional on Wirtz's performance and success with the team, including winning titles in the Premier League and Champions League.
Initially, Bayer Leverkusen had demanded a much higher price of €150 million (approximately £127 million). Although they reduced their valuation after Manchester City and Bayern Munich dropped out of the bidding process, the final fee is still lower than their initial ask.
Wirtz's transfer to Liverpool surpasses the previous British record of £115 million, which was set when Chelsea acquired Moises Caicedo from Brighton two years ago. If Caicedo had agreed to join Liverpool at the time, the club could have paid the same amount.
Wirtz was set to undergo a medical examination at Liverpool this week, but due to the ongoing negotiations, he has decided to take a break and will conduct the tests upon his return from holiday.
