A 53-year-old man from Liverpool's West Derby area is being held on suspicion of attempted murder, as well as dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs. The man allegedly drove a Ford Galaxy car that followed an ambulance through a roadblock on Water Street, where the emergency vehicle was attending to someone who had a suspected heart attack.
As a result of the crash, 50 people were taken to the hospital for treatment. Fortunately, 11 of the injured are still receiving care, but all are reported to be in a stable condition.
Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims from Merseyside Police stated that the incident was unexpected and not related to terrorism. The police did not have any prior intelligence suggesting such an incident would occur.
