Williamson, who is 41 years old, had a successful playing career, most notably spending seven years with Newcastle United where he made 150 appearances. He has also been the head coach at MK Dons and Carlisle United, although his time at Carlisle was relatively short, lasting just under five months.
According to the club, Russell Martin has known Williamson for a long time, as they played together at Wycombe Wanderers. Martin believes that Williamson's qualities will help the team perform well off the pitch.
“I played with Mike at Wycombe Wanderers, so we have a strong relationship,” Martin said. “As a player, he played at the highest level and is an experienced coach who has been a manager himself. I'm also happy to have Sal, the goalkeeping coach, join the team. He has a lot of experience and a strong track record of developing goalkeepers.”
Russell Martin is looking forward to working with both Williamson and Sal, who has a lot of knowledge and character that will be an asset to the players and staff. Rangers' Sporting Director, Kevin Thelwell, also welcomed Williamson and Sal to the team, stating that they will bring a lot of knowledge and strengthen Martin's coaching team.
“Their addition reflects our commitment to building the best environment to deliver success on and off the pitch,” Thelwell said.
