UEFA, the governing body of European football, is expected to vote on a proposal to suspend Israel's participation in their competitions, following a UN Commission's finding that the country has committed genocide in Gaza.
Israel's involvement in global soccer has been under scrutiny in recent days, after the United Nations urged FIFA and UEFA to suspend the country's teams.
According to sources, a majority of UEFA's 20-member executive committee is likely to support the proposal to suspend Israeli teams.
In response, the US government has stated its commitment to ensuring Israel's participation in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the US, Canada, and Mexico next summer.
A spokesperson for the US State Department confirmed that the government will work to prevent Israel's national team from being banned from the World Cup.
